Do I Need to Do a First Aid Course?

Should you complete a First Aid Course?

No matter who you are, or how old you are, the simple answer to this question is “YES”. Every one of us should have the basic knowledge and skills to respond to injury or illness in an emergency, whether it occurs at home, on the street, in the workplace, or anywhere else.

All workplaces in Australia (and many countries overseas) must legally provide First Aid equipment, facilities, and, for some, properly trained First Aiders. This includes everywhere from mines and construction sites to factories, offices, train stations and airports, dental clinics, retail shops, eateries, galleries, salons, and everything in between.

Some industries and jobs require a Recognised First Aid Certificate and/or CPR Certificate as a condition of employment, and many workplaces will provide relevant training in-house or outsource this training to a professional provider such as us here at Catch Training.

Regardless of whether your job requires it, however, you should seriously consider completing First Aid training for your own benefit and that of your family, colleagues, and the wider community. You may save a life.

What is First Aid?

First Aid is the immediate response to a medical emergency. It could be required in cases of accident, illness, or injury, and is provided by everyday people who happen to be on the scene before professional medical assistance arrives – e.g. ambulance, paramedics, etc.

FIRST AID SAVES LIVES.

Its aim is to:

  • Preserve life
  • Protect the unconscious
  • Prevent injury or illness from worsening
  • Alleviate pain (where possible)
  • Promote recovery

Timely, appropriate provision of First Aid can reduce the severity of an injury or acute illness, mitigate the risk of it worsening in its immediate aftermath, and may even preserve life until professional emergency medical assistance arrives.

Our nationally accredited HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course is delivered in person, face-to-face, and covers theory and practical skills for the first response to:

  • CPR (for adults, children, and infants)
  • Bone fractures, dislocations, and breaks
  • Burns and scalding
  • Head and spinal injuries
  • Dealing with an unconscious casualty
  • Management of bleeding
  • Choking (in adults, children, and infants)
  • Poisoning
  • Bites and Stings
  • Severed limbs
  • Bandage application techniques

When Should I Complete a First Aid Course?

As soon as possible!

There are some specific times in life, however, when it is even more important to make sure that your First Aid and CPR skills are up to date:

  • When you are creating or updating your CV/Resume
  • When you are completing high school/university
  • When you are about to start applying for a new job
  • Before welcoming a new baby into your family
  • If caring for children or the elderly
  • If someone in your family or household experiences issues such as chronic disease or illness, anaphylaxis, a mental health condition, etc.
  • You are travelling (especially remotely) – e.g. “Grey Nomads”
  • If it has been more than three (3) years since you last trained – especially for CPR training.

One is never too young to learn basic First Aid and even children aged 8-11 years should understand the most basic concepts and skills.
