Simple Food Safety Tips for Your Family

Keep Your Kitchen Safe!
Family meals are the best part of the day—but no one wants food poisoning on the menu! The good news? Staying safe is simple when you follow these food safety habits:
CLEAN – Wash, Wipe & Rinse
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
- Clean benches, chopping boards, and utensils with hot, soapy water.
- Sanitise surfaces regularly to stop germs from spreading.
- Rinse fruit and veggies under running water before eating.
CHILL – Keep It Cool
- Bacteria multiply quickly in the “danger zone” (5°C–60°C).
- Keep your fridge at 5°C or below.
- Don’t overcrowd—cold air needs space to circulate.
- Thaw frozen food in the fridge, not on the bench.
- Follow the 2-hour rule: don’t leave perishable food out longer than 2 hours.
COOK – Heat Food Right
- Always cook meat, poultry, and seafood until steaming hot.
- Cool leftovers quickly—divide into small containers and refrigerate within an hour.
- Reheat leftovers properly (they should be steaming hot all the way through).
- Defrost food safely in the fridge or microwave—never on the benchtop.
SEPARATE – Stop Cross-Contamination
- Use different chopping boards: one for raw meat, another for veggies and cooked food.
- Store raw meat on the bottom shelf of the fridge in sealed containers.
- Never put cooked food back on a plate that held raw meat.
THE SNIFF TEST = A MYTH!
- Harmful bacteria can’t always be seen, smelled, or tasted.
- Golden rule: If in doubt, throw it out!
By sticking to these simple tips, you’ll keep your kitchen safe, your food delicious, and your family smiling.
