Stay Cool, Stay Safe: Beat the Heat!
Summer in Australia is all about beach days, BBQs, and sunshine — but when the mercury climbs past 40°C, things can turn dangerous fast. Heatstroke isn’t just a bad case of overheating — it’s a serious medical emergency that can strike anyone, anywhere.
What Is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke happens when your body reaches 40°C or higher and can’t cool itself down. It can cause confusion, dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, hot dry skin, or even loss of consciousness. If someone shows these signs, call 000 immediately and cool them down with water, wet towels, or ice packs while waiting for help.
Who’s Most at Risk?
- Older adults and young children
- Outdoor workers, tradies, and athletes
- People with chronic illnesses or on certain medications
How to Stay Safe in the Heat
✅ Hydrate constantly – Drink water often, even if you’re not thirsty.
✅ Stay indoors during peak heat (11 AM – 4 PM).
✅ Dress smart – light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
✅ Take breaks if you’re working or exercising outside.
✅ Look out for others – especially elderly relatives, young kids, and pets.
